Undergraduate Scholarships offered by the Government of India 2011/12

Undergraduate Scholarships offered by the Government of India under the Scheme of Scholarship for Nationals of Sri Lanka for 2011-12 academic session


Applications are invited from eligible Sri Lankan students for the award of Undergraduate Scholarships offered by the Government of India for the academic year commencing in 2011.Expected number of nominations is 40.

1. General Eligibility Requirements:-

i) Should be a citizen of Sri Lanka.

ii) Should be below 22 years of age on 2011.01.17

iii) Should have passed all subjects in G.C.E. A/L Examination conducted by the Department of Examination, Sri Lanka with subjects relevant to the field applicant intends to apply.

iv) Should possess a high proficiency in English.

v) Should be in good health and ready to live in India during the period of study .

vi) Should not be employed under the Government or a statutory body.

vii) Applicant should not be a student already registered or following an undergraduate course at any University or a full time course of study in a state sector Higher Educational Institution.

2. Fields of Study

Candidates may apply for all other fields of study except for Medical Sciences. Field of study selected at the beginning will not be changed later under any circumstances.


3. Qualifications Required

Students should have gained passes in subjects prescribed for the intended field of study at the G.C.E (A/L) Examination.

Fields of Study Subjects

Bio Science Physics, Chemistry, Biology

Engineering Physics, Chemistry, Com. Math's

Other fields of study Three subjects relevant to the desired field (Arts, Commerce etc.)

Should have obtained at least a very good pass ('B) in English at the G.C.E O/L Examination, as the medium of instruction in India is English.

4. Terms of Award:-

The Scholarship will provide,

a. A Personal maintenance allowance

b. Approved tuition and Exam fees

c. A grant for books and apparatus, where applicable.

d. A grant for expenses of approved study travels within India .

e. Round trip Air Ticket

(Please note that students, who are selected for courses of study in sciences, should bear the laboratory fees & related charges.)

5. Special Notes

i) Conditions laid down in this notification may vary as per the criteria imposed by the Indian authorities without prior notice.

ii) If any student declines the offer after the selection through the interview, he/she will not be considered for any of the scholarships during the year.

iii) Candidates who are awarded a Scholarship for undergraduate studies would not be considered for admission to any local University.

iv) Candidates after the receipt of placements cannot decline the Scholarship except under a situation that the Higher Educational Institute concerned is not recognized by the University Grants Commission

v) Extension of the period of the Scholarship will not be recommended by this Ministry.

vi) Field of study selected at the beginning will not be allowed to change later under any circumstances.

6. Applications:-

i) Every Application should conform to the specimen form provided.

ii) The words "Indian Undergraduate Scholarships , 2011" should be hand or type-written on top left corner of the envelope containing the application.

iii) Each Applicant should submit only one application for award, and should state whether he /she has been nominated for a similar award in the past.

iv) Any statement in the application, which is found to be incorrect before selection, will render the applicant liable to disqualification. If such inaccuracy is found after selection it will lead to the withdrawal of the award.

v) A non-refundable payment should be made by affixing a stamp to the value of Rs.50/- in the cage provided for this purpose in the application and cancelled by the candidate's signature.

vi) Any application, which is not sent through the proper channels or incomplete in any respect or received late, will be rejected.

vii) Closing Date: Applications will be accepted only up to 4 p.m on 17.01.2011.

viii) Applications should be sent to the following address by registered post or by hand to reach on or before the closing date.

7. Nominations & Final Selections

i) Nominations will be made through an interview after short listing of applications on the basis of the Z Score obtained at the G.C.E A/L Examination. These nominations will be forwarded to the relevant selection authority through the High Commission of India in Colombo.

ii) The final selections will be made by the Government of India as the awarding authority accordingly. Therefore no candidate should treat his/her nomination for a scholarship as an acceptance for an award. Acceptance is a matter entirely within the discretion of the awarding agency.
